LED Lighting

Viking Extrusions are leading suppliers of specially formulated and pigmented extrusions, mouldings and gaskets used in the LED lighting industry.

Silicone Properties for LED Lighting

Silicone rubber’s inert, flexible properties make it suitable for a variety of lighting applications. Silicone maintains its properties in high temperatures up to 200°C (up to 300°C for specialist grades). As engineers of lighting systems switch to using LED, silicone rubber is increasingly being used as it can withstand the heat generated by the diodes.

LED Lighting Applications

Some common uses for silicone in LED Lighting applications include:

Many new automotive lighting designs include LED lighting. Silicone gaskets are frequently used in such lighting assemblies. They provide environmentally resistant seals to protect the electronic components from water and dust ingress.

Silicone sheeting can be used to produce gaskets that provide excellent sealing, which prevents water and dust ingress. Silicone is resistant to environmental elements such as UV and Ozone and as a result can increase the working life-span of lighting systems. Silicone’s flexibility allows it to create a positive seal between surfaces where there is a variance in the sealing gap, protecting internal electronic systems.

LED lighting is more frequently being used in electronic signs and displays. Silicone rubber is the material of choice for sealing such units as it can withstand high temperatures and is resistant to weathering.

Silicone Rubber Grades for LED Lighting

Viking Extrusions have in-house milling facilities and can produce a range of specialist materials for use in lighting applications including:

  • 20 – 80 Shore A
  • High temperature (up to 300°C)
  • High tear strength
  • UL94

Optically Transparent Silicone – VCM80ET

Viking extrusions have developed a new grade of silicone specifically for use in LED lighting applications. This material has been specially formulated to have maximum optical clarity and can be extruded to form lenses capable of distributing light evenly and resisting the heat generated by LED diodes.
